A New Era of Trade💵 and Diplomacy under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA)

-- A New Era of Trade and Diplomacy under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA)

How the world sees and relates with Africa will never be the same again. How businesses "sell" to Africa and Governments engage in diplomacy with the region has also been disrupted. When I speak with Investors I like to share with them that to be successful in the region they must now "listen closely to the aspirations of Africans". No longer will half baked ideas based on random assumptions work. If you do not want to waste resources chasing "rabbits down a hole" then what I call "Precision strategy" must be applied. This approach will be the game-changer for players seeking emerging opportunities in various sectors such as Agriculture, Manufacturing, Mining, Retail and more.

Africa is speaking... the world needs to listen...

When I first began to sketch the concepts for what will become Trade with Africa Business Summit about 5 years ago, I had clarity on the urgent need to shift the narratives around Africa from Foreign Aid to Trade. Several things were also clear to me: for example

  • Over the past 20-30 years Africa's policy leaders built and strengthened political relationships in political regions such as Washington, DC,. which led to an overall increase in Foreign Aid toward the continent. In recent times however, the conversation has rightly shifted from capturing Aid to capturing Trade opportunities but the accompanying strategy need to also shift. The biggest gap I continue to see is that Africa's business and political leaders must now prioritize establishing stronger partnerships with the business communities around the world to capture trade. For example here in the U.S. trade opportunities abound outside of D.C. because Corporate America is the true engine that drives trade while Washington remains the center for diplomacy.
  • Networking: The timing is right for business leaders around the world to develop meaning relationships and effective strategies towards advancing trade with Africa. Africa is home to 1.1 billion people and by 2050, the population is projected to double to become one of the world’s productive youth workforce. Africa also has about 60% of the world's remaining arable land and manufacturing is steadily shifting to the region. .
Africa will play increasingly more significant role in international trade and the region can no longer be ignored!
  • Content: Agenda for any of my engagements are always structured around igniting trade conversations, presenting actionable data and driving results. We know that Africa offers new export market for manufactured products from around the world. Similarly, regions around the world serve as an untapped markets for authentic African products—raw and manufactured. For leaders interested in export and import, sustainable agriculture, supply chain, technology innovation, women’s empowerment, health and education, this conference always offers unique opportunity to capture ideas that can be replicated to fast track trade with the region. U.S. for example still engages at about 2% of total global trade with Sub-Saharan Africa and there is room to actively grow these numbers.
